Terebellum "Terebell" Sheratan (pronounced: TEAR-ah-bell SHARE-ah-tan) is the Rephaite sovereign-elect of the Ranthen. She is Arcturus Mesarthim's longest friend and his former mate.

Biography[]

History[]

Terebell is the first mate that made Warden desire long-term companionship. They were still together when the Waning of the Veils began. Throughout the chaos of the civil war, Terebell was always at Warden's side. They fought hard for the Mothallath. When they were defeated, Nashira Sargas chose Warden as blood-consort. Sundering a Rephaite from their mate would have been unthinkable, but Nashira didn't care for old customs.

When Nashira summoned Warden to plight his troth to her in public, Terebell challenged Nashira to single combat. Nashira had honed formidable skills during the war, and she came very close to destroying Terebell. Warden intervened. He swore to Nashira that he would bind himself to her and pledge the Mesarthim to her cause in perpetuity if she spared Terebell. Nashira agreed. Terebell has never forgiven Warden. She believed they should both have given their lives in defiance. They will always care for each other, and Terebell has Warden's affection and allegiance, but he will never again be her mate.

Terebell, Warden, and several other Rephaim orchestrated an uprising against the Sargas during Bone Season XVIII. However, one of the humans, XVIII-39-7, betrayed them by telling Nashira about their plans in exchange for his freedom. All the humans were fed to the Emim, and the Rephaim involved were tortured by one of Nashira's poltergeists. The torture left painful scars on their bodies, giving them the name "the scarred ones."

Terebell no longer formally holds the title of Warden under Sargas law because Nashira revoked it after the civil war. However, in her opinion, she is the rightful Warden of the Sheratan, because the Mothallath bestowed that title on her.

The Bone Season[]

Terebell lives in the Residence of Oriel in Sheol I. She is the keeper of Carl Dempsey-Brown, Tilda, and Charles during Bone Season XX. Terebell continues to be a friend and ally of Arcturus. Terebell is frequently gone, leaving Tilda plenty of time to smoke aster.

Terebell is with Warden when he brings Paige Mahoney to her first test. Paige sees her again after her second test where she fought an Emite. Paige wakes up in Warden's bed. She hears him talking to someone and pulls aside the curtain. She sees Terebell. They are examining Paige's phone. Terebell stows Paige's phone in her shirt, she and Warden touch foreheads, and then Terebell leaves. Warden tells Paige that Terebell has Paige's phone so that Nashira doesn't find it.

Paige is almost caught stealing supplies in the House by Thuban Sargas. She is saved when Terebell protects her. Thuban taunts Terebell by mentioning the "days when she had power over him" and how long ago that time was. He further taunts her by discussing the time she spent with the other Ranthen in Tom Tower being tortured by Nashira. Paige notices how Terebell shows real fear in her eyes when Thuban mentions Gomeisa Sargas.

Terebell is present for the Bicentenary Celebration. When Alsafi Sualocin brings Paige to the side of the stage in preparation for Nashira to execute her, Terebell is there. She asks Paige where Arcturus is, and Paige tells her that Thuban and Situla Mesarthim took him to the gallery. Alsafi tells Paige that they will deal with them, but that Paige must delay Nashira. As Paige begins fighting Nashira before she can be executed, Terebell, Alsafi, and Pleione Sualocin attack Nashira with spools to give Warden time to help Paige escape. Terebell finds Paige and the other humans in Port Meadow as they wait for the train to arrive. Terebell tells Paige to let Warden know where the meet them, as they were unable to kill Nashira and must now go into hiding.

The Mime Order[]

Terebell fled from Sheol I after the rebellion and has become a renegade with the other Ranthen. Terebell and Errai Sarin accost Paige in Seven Dials. Terebell officially introduces herself as the leader of the Ranthen. She informs Paige about what happened after she left Sheol I. Terebell and the others failed to destroy Nashira and Gomeisa in the colony. They had barred themselves inside the Residence of the Suzerain, along with every loyal red-jacket that had not been killed, to wait out the destruction. Once it was clear that the Ranthen would never reach them, they went into hiding. Terebell tells Paige that Arcturus had made for London to warn Paige of Nashira's hunt for her. However he never sent word back to Terebell. They want Paige to find Warden using her spiritual link with him, the golden cord. Terebell tells Paige that if she tells anyone about the golden cord, she will cut out her tongue. When Paige expresses hesitation about working with her and Errai, Terebell tells Paige that she is beholden to her for shielding her from the Sargas when Paige was stealing supplies in Sheol I, and Terebell doesn't forget when she's owed a debt. Before leaving, she gives Paige a bag of salt and a bag of poppy anemone, and tells her that if there is one thing the Rephaim excel in, it is biding their time.

Warden brings Paige to meet with Terebell. Errai and Pleione are there, as is Lucida Sargas. Terebell informs Paige that Sheol II's location has been decided but they only know that it will be in France. Terebell continues by saying that before the Ranthen can strike at Nashira and Gomeisa again, it is essential that they dismantle Scion. Paige shows the Rephaim a copy of The Rephaite Revelation and says she needs money to fund the publishing of it. Terebell tells Paige that if she wins the scrimmage, the Ranthen will fund the reorganization of the London syndicate. They will also, where possible, provide natural resources from the Netherworld to contribute to the war effort. And when word reaches the last strongholds of the Netherworld, the Ranthen will be able to provide soldiers of their own. Terbell requires Paige to submit herself to training with Errai and Pleione. Errai immediately refuses and Paige convinces Terebell to let her train with Warden instead. Before leaving, Terebell pulls Paige aside and tells her that she may have agreed to fund her revolution and saved her in the colony, but Paige must not forget her place, which is below them. Terebell also asks Paige about the rumor spread by Nashira that Warden and Paige are in an intimate relationship. Paige denies the charges as Warden asked her to so they are both protected.

The morning after the Emite attack, Terebell and the other Ranthen meet Paige and Warden outside the safe house they spent the night at with the others. Terebell tells Paige that Situla has been sighted in Cheapside. The Ranthen are staying in their own safe house in the East End until the scrimmage. Paige asks Terebell to look for Ivy Jacob and the other Sheol I survivors who who have been captured by the Abbess. After winning the scrimmage, the Ranthen arrive with Ivy and the other survivors. Paige names Terebell as one of the high commanders of the Mime Order, and she is in charge of resources.

The Song Rising[]

Terebell has commanded the Ranthen to regularly visit the cells of the Mime Order to help the voyants hone their skills in spirit combat. She has become obsessed with the tiny minority who support Jaxon Hall. She views Paige's unwillingness to replace Jaxon with a new mime-lord or mime-queen for I-4 as a sign that she is secretly loyal to him and is awaiting his return. Terebell demands that Paige remove Zeke and Nadine from I-4.

When the sudden curfew in the citadel keeps Paige from meeting her, Terebell and the Ranthen come to Paige's safe house. Terebell attacks Paige and tells her that she is a poor investment. She claims the curfew doesn't supersede Paige's duty to meet her. Warden arrives and defuses things. Terebell informs Paige that the Ranthen are leaving. They have found pockets of Rephaim who are willing to confront the Sargas with them, both on Earth and in the Netherworld. They have asked the Ranthen to prove their commitment to rekindling war before they will take up the cause. To do this, the Ranthen must persuade an influential member of each of the six families to join them, preferably a Warden because they are the head of the family. She gives Paige her “approval” to destroy Senshield but expects her to get authorization before taking any action. She tells Paige that she can contact her through Lucida who will be staying behind while the rest of the Ranthen join her in the Netherworld to find allies. They will be starting with Adhara Sarin who is rumored to have Ranthen sympathies. Before leaving, Terebell informs Paige that she is ending Warden's training of the syndicate and that if Paige needs help training to ask Lucida.

The Ranthen find Adhara in the Netherworld. Terebell begins attempting to forge an alliance with her with assistance from Mira and Errai. She sends the rest of the Ranthen back to Earth. Terebell allows Warden and Lucida to come to Edinburgh with Nick Nygård to meet up with Paige and her group. She assigns Pleione and Taygeta Chertan to take over their roles in the Beneath.

The Mask Falling[]

Terebell's current aims are to reconstruct Alsafi's network of human contacts and to continue making Rephaite allies. She fears that unless Scarlett Burnish can help them, their line of communication with the Ranthen's financiers could be lost.

Physical Description[]

Terebell is incredibly tall, almost the same height as Arcturus, with chartreuse yellow eyes, except for when she's fed on aura. Her irises are full of fire. She has glossy, deep brown hair that curves around her face like a hood, ending at her broad shoulders. A long, elegant nose sweeps down from between slightly upturned eyes. Both her lips are spare, making her look disapproving. As with any Rephaite, it's impossible to tell how old or young she is. Her sarx is a blend of silver and copper. Once she is no longer living in Sheol I, Terebell is dressed in modern day clothes instead of clothes from the monarch days. She wears a long woolen coat, sturdy winter boots, tailored trousers, and elbow-length, buttoned gloves. She keeps a knife on her belt. Like the other Ranthen, Terebell has scars on her back from Nashira's punishment. She doesn't blink. Her body is a battle cry.

Personality[]

Terebell is proud. She carries herself as if she expects a fight. Like all Rephaim, her dreamscape is armored. Warden says Terebell has always been a harsh judge of the human race. She strongly dislikes humans's reliance on money. She calls it "the dark obsession of the human race." She agrees with Errai that ethereal technology is a disgrace and a desecration.
