The Bone Season Wiki

Scion Citadel of Paris is the capital of the French Republic. It is scheduled to be the harvest citadel for Sheol II.

Description[]

The voyants of Paris call themselves anormales, or anormaux. They are an old and intricate syndicate. Though it had once enjoyed a genial relationship with the London syndicate, the two communities have been all but estranged for the last century.

The city of Paris roars. It is magnificent. Paris is her own creature. There is no trace of a Brekkabox, but there are some somewhere because no citadel could get away with not having a Brekkabox. The carrières, meaning quarries, is the system of abandoned mines and ossuaries that lies beneath Paris. It covers at least two hundred miles. Scion has never been able to map it. The carrières is the location of the Paris syndicate, known as Le Nouveau Régime. Clairvoyants patrol the tunnels for outsiders. The entrance to many of the carrières are manhole covers. There are hundreds of thousands of spirits in the carrières. The remains of at least six million people lie in them. Many of the dead remain with their bones. In exchange for not banishing them, the spirits let the voyants share their domain. Paige can feel how threadbare the veils have become in the carrières. There are murals on some of the walls. Another name for the carrières is la ville souterraine, or the Underground City. Within the carrières is Le Passage des Voleurs, or the Passage of Thieves, a secret tunnel that ends at Sheol II. The entrance to this tunnel is called Apollyon. One of the most unstable parts of the tunnel is nicknamed La gorge de l’abîme, or The Throat of the Abyss.

The city has triumphal monuments all throughout the city. For example, there is Porte Nord, meaning North Gate, an arch that honors the French soldiers who died at the battle of the Iron Gates during the Balkan Incursion. The Court of Miracles, or la Cour des Miracles, is located on the Rue des Forges. It's the slums where the outcasts of Paris meet. Paige notices how voyants and amaurotics share the space in peace. The rotties are clearly aware of the unnaturals in their midst. They speak in a mix of French and English, switching seamlessly and often. The Eiffel Tower is a tourist attraction and a transmission station for use in national emergencies. Le Grande Salle de Paris was one called Notre-Dame. It was formerly a place of worship in the monarch days, but is now used for significant events and ceremonies. La Forteresse de Justice, or the Fortress of Justice, is a splendid complex that occupies the western side of the district called Île de la Citadelle, or Citadel Island. The Fortress of Justice has cone-shaped roofs topping the crenellated towers. It is home to the Inquisitorial Courts and the Guild of Vigilance. Nearby is Sainte-Chapelle, or Holy Chapel, with its famous stained glass. Pont au Change is a bustling shopping area near by. The Bastille is black and windowless, and where clairvoyant prisoners are held until they're executed. Place de Grève is where the main guillotine stands. The Gare du Nord, or North Station, is the largest train station in Paris and the primary link to London.

The citadel is divided into multiple districts and areas, such as Rue Montmartre and the fashionable Rive Droite, or Right Bank. Île aux Vaches is where many wealthy officials live. Île Louviers is the location of some of the most famous Parisian markets and arcades. The Inquisitorial family lives in L’Hôtel Garuche, on Rue du Faubourg. Across the street is the Swedish Embassy, and a Domino Program safe house is nearby on Rue de Surène. Montparnasse is another famous district. It's the location of Le Mère des Douleurs, meaning Mother of Sorrows, a cafe and safe space for voyants. The cemetery for this district is called le cimetière du Sud. Another important district is Passy. This is where Le Vieux Orphelin's secret refuge is, and one of the natural islands of the Seine, Île des Cygnes. Rue Vernet is an expensive district. This is where the Arc de Triomphe and Grand Cœur are found.
