Mudlarks are a group of amaurotic outcasts. They are similar to the toshers.

Description[]

Mudlarks and toshers are homeless Londerers who make their living by scouring the lost rivers, drains, and sewers of the citadel for trinkets and artifacts to sell. Mudlarks scavenge for valuables on the banks of the Thames. Other names for them are "sewer-hunters" and "water-folk." Mudlarks have combed the Thames since the days of Queen Victoria. Mudlarks and toshers are distinct communities but are closely intertwined. They share a leader who almost always takes the name Styx upon election. The two groups claim most of the tunnels under London as their territory. They treat the manholes on the street as their doors. They protect their "kingdom of shit" like it's a river of gold. There's an unspoken agreement with the syndicate that it is their realm. No syndies venture down there. They have no interest in dealing with syndies. Anytime the syndicate has tried to push too far underground, they have driven them off with spears. According to Minty Wolfson, in 1978, it was agreed that the Beneath is the territory of the mudlarks and toshers, beyond debate. The deep parts of London are theirs and theirs alone. Their right to the Beneath is enshrined in syndicate law.
