Clairvoyants are humans and other beings who possess clairvoyance, which is the ability to access the æther. There are many different types of clairvoyants. Clairvoyants often refer themselves as voyants, while Scion and most amaurotics refer to them as unnaturals.

Description[]

Clairvoyants access the interior minds of people through their dreamscapes, which is the place where memories are stored. Because Scion has made clairvoyance illegal, voyants generally have two possible futures: to busk and beg at the mercy of the Scion citizens, or to join one of the seven mime gangs and use their prohibited clairvoyance to commit crimes and earn money for their mime-lord or mime-queen. Amaurotics claim voyants are afflicted with clairvoyance. Voyants don't dream, only amaurotics do.

While all voyants can sense the æther to some degree, not all voyants can perceive the spirit world visually. Around 85% of voyants in London are described as being sighted, also called having the spirit sight or third eye. Sighted voyants display a keyhole-shaped defect in one or both eyes, called coloboma. People with only one coloboma, like Nick, are described as half-sighted. This means that they can switch their spirit sight on and off whenever they please. People with two coloboma, like Jaxon, are full-sighted and forced to see spirits constantly. The sighted report spirits manifesting in a number of ways: threads of glowing color, floating sparkles, pulsing zigzags, or flurries of bright spots.

The other 15% of London voyants have no coloboma at all and are known as the unsighted or spirit-blind. Spirit-blindness tends to be exhibited by the higher orders, particularly jumpers and furies. When voyants are unsighted, they generally develop a greater sensitivity to the æther and can learn to identify auras and spirits from the way they feel. Sighted clairvoyant are often better at physical combat than unsighted voyants because they see an aura shift before their opponent's muscles move. Unsighted voyants can't see it, but they can learn to sense it.

London amaurotics outnumber clairvoyants ten to one. Nighttime is the most dangerous time for voyants because of the NVD, but it's also when their gifts are the strongest. Unless it's essential, voyants try to only go out when the SVD is in control. Most voyants avoid public transport. Voyants don't protect each other unless they are in the same gang.

In Scion France, clairvoyants are called anormales or anormaux.

Etymology[]

The word clairvoyant means "one who sees clearly." The term comes from the French word clair, meaning "clear" and the word voyance, meaning "vision." It is used to refer to the ability to gain information about an object, person, location, or physical event through means other than the known human sense. It is a form of extrasensory perception.
