The Bone Season Wiki

Bibliomancers are a type of common soothsayer that requires books to connect to the æther. They find a joy in reading and value books above all other objects. They employ sacred books, especially specific words and verses, for various clairvoyance purposes.

Description[]

Bibliomancers, also called, stichomancers, have existed since before the Middle Ages. They practice their ability by opening a book to a random page or allowing a book to fall open from the spine. The first word of that page, or a passage picked at without looking, indicates the immediate future of the inquirer. Often a scared or respected text may be used instead of amaurotic texts. This has been made more difficult by the systemic burning of many voyant texts by Scion.

A bibliomancer claims to do this form of scrying with more accuracy than when another clairvoyant tries, as he or she is guided by spirits. According to On the Merits of Unnaturalness, "it's an entertaining ability for busking, but largely unhelpful in the pursuit of more constructive activities."[1]
